The Golden Light was wonderful!! I haven't been here for at least 5yrs. It was wonderful then and it was wonderful now
Quirkiest place I have been to since Wagner's Pharmacy in Louisville, KY. The food is just as good too.
I am not sure but I suspect the grease they are cooking in is the same grease they were using when Route 66 first opened. That is a GOOD thing, not an insult.
Definitely step back to another era. This is a burger joint like others only say they are. The small, square windows with bars on the outside make the idea of going inside questionable. The National Register of Historic Places plaque outside the front door make going inside feel okay. And, it is worth it. Hamburgers galore and baskets of real fries that will feed the entire table. Cooked and made like 1946 on equipment that dates back to the days when Rte. 66 was the way west. The Golden Light Cantina is perhaps the only continuously operating restaurant still in existence on old Rte. 66. Thus, the reason for the plaque outside the front door. Find it in an old downtown area of Amarillo. It's a treat.
Excellent venue for great food and live music! Pub-style in-door/out-door restaurant with adjoining full-size bar, large stage, professional sound system and technician, lighting, dance floor, etc., featuring top bands nearly every night of the week! Wonderful staff! A big shout-out from "Blind Man's Bluff" to Juan, Wade and Paul, for really going the extra mile to make us feel right at home and make sure all our needs were taken care of!
It's a tight fit and expect a wait, the servers are "How y'all doin'" friendly, and the food is hot and fresh. If you order the Large fries expect to share them with someone or expect them to be your whole meal. Oh, and save room for a milkshake!
This is original Route 66 at its Amarillo best.
Had a bacon cheeseburger, cup of green chili stew, quarter order of cheese fries, and a can of Dales Pale Ale for 15 dollars. The burger was absolutely amazing. I guess there's a good reason this place has lasted 70 years. Certainly adding it to the list of places to go anytime I pass through Amarillo.
